What Happens if someone needs a bone marrow transplant but does not have a matching donor?
Not all is lost. In the days of technology and connectivity, if a patient needing a bone marrow transplant does not have a matching donor sibling we do have options of treatment.
The 1st option is to have an un-related but fully matched bone marrow donation. In this, the patient’s high-resolution HLA is sent to Bone Marrow Banks situated in various parts of the world. Hopefully and in most of the cases, we do get a matching donor. Once we get it, Bone Marrow from the donor is then shipped to the hospital and we go ahead with a fully matched Bone Marrow Transplant.
Now, the flip side is, it is a slightly expensive procedure. So for those who cannot afford the expensive procedure, we have an option of Half Matched Bone Marrow donation.
In Half Matched Bone Marrow Transplant or Haplo Transplant, as it is known, we take donations from Biological parents; mother or father, half-matched siblings or daughter, son, etc. Having said so, the success rates drop down by a few percentages. Also the chances of GVHD which is Graft Versus Host disease also rise. These conditions are then managed medically by an expert hematologist.
