What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a number of diseases that involve problems with the hormone insulin. Diabetes can occur when the pancreas produces very little or no insulin, or when the body does not respond appropriately to insulin. As yet, there is no cure. People with diabetes need to manage their disease to stay healthy.

What is Diabetes

Types of Diabetes:

Type 1 Diabetes: Type 1 diabetes is caused by an autoimmune reaction that stops your body from making insulin. It’s usually diagnosed in children, teens, and young adults. If you have type 1 diabetes, you’ll need to take insulin every day to survive.
Type 2 Diabetes: With type 2 diabetes, your body doesn’t use insulin well and can’t keep blood sugar at normal levels. It develops over many years and is usually diagnosed in adults. Type 2 diabetes can be prevented or delayed with healthy lifestyle changes, such as losing weight, eating healthy food, and being active.
Gestational Diabetes: Gestational diabetes develops in pregnant women who have never had diabetes. If you have gestational diabetes, your baby could be at higher risk for health problems. Gestational diabetes usually goes away after your baby is born but increases your risk for type 2 diabetes later in life.
Pre diabetes: With pre diabetes, blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not high enough yet to be diagnosed as type 2 diabetes. Pre diabetes raises your risk for type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke.

Men with diabetes may have a decreased sex drive, erectile dysfunction, and poor muscle strength. Women with diabetes can also have symptoms such as urinary tract infections, yeast infections, and dry, itchy skin.

Causes of Diabetes: Different causes are associated with each type of diabetes

Causes of Diabetes
Type 1 diabetes: The immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. Genes may play a role in some people. It’s also possible that a virus sets off the immune system attack.
Type 2 diabetes: Type 2 diabetes stems from a combination of genetics and lifestyle factors. Being overweight or obese increases your risk too. Carrying extra weight, especially in your belly, makes your cells more resistant to the effects of insulin on your blood sugar. Family members share genes that make them more likely to get type 2 diabetes and to be overweight.
Gestational diabetes: Gestational diabetes is the result of hormonal changes during pregnancy. The placenta produces hormones that make a pregnant woman’s cells less sensitive to the effects of insulin. This can cause high blood sugar during pregnancy.

Ayurveda Understanding of Diabetes:

In Ayurveda, diabetes is referred to as “sweet urine” disease. When blood sugar levels rise above a certain threshold, it spills over into the urine and can be detected. The ancient description of this disease includes an appreciation for the fact that derangements in body tissues take place due to imbalances in metabolism.

Ayurveda Understanding of Diabetes

Ayurveda considers poor digestion as the primary cause of diabetes. Weak digestion leads to the production of a sticky toxin that can accumulate in the pancreatic cells and impair the production of insulin.

Ayurveda Treatment for Diabetes:

Panchakarma therapy very much helps a person in controlling diabetes.

A patient first undergoes the Pre procedure therapies that prepares him/her for the procedures that will be followed. Oleation is done to loosen the toxins and open up the circulation channels and then the person is given a steam bath so that the body gets ready for discarding these wastes.

Pre-operative procedure therapies for Diabetes involves:

  1. Herbal Powder Kneading Therapy:

In this therapy medicinal pastes having high healing properties are applied on a person’s scalp to relieve mental tension, increase the person’s memory power, and relax body and nervous system.
