Total Knee Replacement Surgery

Total Knee Replacement Surgery
Detailed Information

Total Knee Replacement SurgeryWhat is Total Knee Replacement Surgery?

A total knee replacement is a surgical procedure whereby artificial material replaces the diseased knee joint. The ends of the bones forming the knee joints are covered with metal and plastic components together with the knee cap. This procedure may be considered for someone suffering from serious arthritis or knee damage. It allows the knee to move properly. The aim of knee replacement surgery is to resurface the damaged areas of the knee joint and to relieve knee pain that can not be controlled through other treatments.

A knee replacement procedure has few basic steps:

At the ends of femur and tibia, damaged cartilage surfaces are removed with a little underlying bone. The cartilage and bone removed are replaced by metal components that recreate the joint surface. These metal parts can be cemented into the bone. The patella’s under-surface is cut and resurfaced with a plastic button.

Osteoarthritis – The cartilage softens and wears away the knee’s bones. Then the bones rub against each other, causing pain and stiffness in the knee.

Rheumatoid arthritis – It inflames and thickenes the synovial membrane that surrounds the joint. This chronic inflammation may damage the cartilage, resulting in loss of cartilage, pain, and

What are the symptoms for Total Knee Replacement Surgery?

  • Severe pain and stiffness make walking, climbing stairs or going out of a chair difficult for the patient.
  • Swollen Knees
  • Bowed Knees

Evaluations for Total Knee Replacement Surgery

  • A physical examination – This will assess knee movement, stabilization, strength and alignment of the entire knee.
  • X-rays – These images help determine the extent of the knee damage and deformity.
  • Blood Tests
  • MRI

Treatment for Total Knee Replacement Surgery

The surgeon will perform this surgery under general anaesthesia. The surgeon removes the damaged bone and cartilage and places the new metal and plastic implants to restore the knee’s alignment and function.

Replacement of the knee may be total or partial.

  • Total knee replacement

Surgery involves replacing the knee joint from both sides. The person will have less pain and better mobility, but scar tissue will be present, which can make moving and bending the knees hard.

  • Partial knee replacement

Partial replacement will only replace one side of the knee joint. Less bone will be remove, so the incision will be smaller, but it will not last as long as a total replacement. It is suitable for people with only one part of the knee being damaged.
