Do you love the leisure walk in the evening or the way your child or grandchild makes you run after them? If yes, then you are definitely in love with your knee.

Because this largest and most complex hinge joint of yours is helping you to perform some of your major daily activities like walking, running sitting, kicking. It’s your responsibility to take good care of your knee.

So, if you are facing a hard time to perform simple activities, like – walking or climbing stairs, feel regular pain, probably you are in need of Knee Replacement Surgery.

When are you in need of Knee Replacement Surgery?

Some of the symptoms detailed below can probably lead to Knee Replacement Surgery:

  • Your pain persists or recurs over time
  • Your knee aches during and after exercise
  • You’re no longer as mobile as you’d like to be
  • Medication and using a cane aren’t delivering enough relief
  • Your knee stiffens up from sitting in a car or a movie theater
  • You feel pain in rainy weather
  • The pain prevents you from sleeping
  • You feel a decrease in knee motion or the degree to which you’re able to bend your knee
  • Your knees are stiff or swollen
  • You have difficulty walking or climbing stairs
  • You have difficulty getting in and out of chairs and bathtubs
  • You experience morning stiffness that typically lasts less than 30 minutes (as opposed to stiffness lasting longer than 45 minutes, a sign of an inflammatory condition called rheumatoid arthritis)
  • You feel a “grating” of your joint
  • You’ve had a previous injury to the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) of your knee

What is Knee Replacement Surgery?

Knee PainIn order to remove the pain and disability caused by arthritis or other joint problems, while preserving movement, knee replacement surgery is recommended. It is an invasive procedure that involves the removal of a damaged knee-joint, which is then replaced by an artificial joint.

The procedure corrects deformity, stiffness and unbearable pain. Also, it boosts the ability of the knee to stand in certain postures for a longer duration of time. As compared to any other method, knee replacement surgery is the most effective as well as the most long-lasting solution for knee pain. Most of the patients who undergo this surgery develop the ability to walk again comfortably, without anyone’s assistance in around 5-6 weeks.

How will you get diagnosed for Knee Replacement Surgery?

The doctor will take a thorough examination of your knee, analyze X-rays, and conduct physical tests. In order to confirm if you are having rheumatoid arthritis he may suggest you to have Blood and other special imaging tests, such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)

What happens during Knee Replacement Surgery ?

  • The surgeon makes an incision across the front of the knee to gain access to the patella commonly referred to as the kneecap. In a traditional knee replacement, the incision is usually about 8 to 10 inches long. In minimally invasive knee surgery, the incision is usually about 4 to 6 inches long.
  • After the knee-joint is exposed, the damaged bone and cartilage from the end of the femur is cut away and the end of the femur is cut and resurfaced to fit the first part of the artificial knee, the femoral component.
  • The metal femoral component is attached to the end of the femur with bone cement to seal it.
  • Next, the surgeon removes damaged bone and cartilage from the top of the tibia and then shapes the bone to fit the metal and plastic tibia components.
  • The bottom portion of the implant, called the tibial tray, is fitted to the tibia with the help of bone cement. After that the surgeon will put a polyethylene (medical-grade plastic) insert to sit between the tibial tray and the femoral component which will act as a kind of buffer. This insert will provide support for the body during bending and flexing the knee.
  • The patella is then returned to the normal position with an additional plastic component to ensure a proper fit with the rest of your implant.
  • The procedure is completed with closing of the incision with stitches or staples, and then bandage it and preparing for recovery.
