Diabetes is a number of diseases that involve problems with the hormone insulin. Diabetes can occur when the pancreas produces very little or no insulin, or when the body does not respond appropriately to insulin. As yet, there is no cure. People with diabetes need to manage their disease to stay healthy.
Type 1 Diabetes: Type 1 diabetes is caused by an autoimmune reaction that stops your body from making insulin. It’s usually diagnosed in children, teens, and young adults. If you have type 1 diabetes, you’ll need to take insulin every day to survive. |
Type 2 Diabetes: With type 2 diabetes, your body doesn’t use insulin well and can’t keep blood sugar at normal levels. It develops over many years and is usually diagnosed in adults. Type 2 diabetes can be prevented or delayed with healthy lifestyle changes, such as losing weight, eating healthy food, and being active. |
Gestational Diabetes: Gestational diabetes develops in pregnant women who have never had diabetes. If you have gestational diabetes, your baby could be at higher risk for health problems. Gestational diabetes usually goes away after your baby is born but increases your risk for type 2 diabetes later in life. |
Pre diabetes: With pre diabetes, blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not high enough yet to be diagnosed as type 2 diabetes. Pre diabetes raises your risk for type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. |
Diabetes symptoms are caused by rising blood sugar.
The general symptoms of diabetes include:
Symptoms in men |
Symptoms in women |
Men with diabetes may have a decreased sex drive, erectile dysfunction, and poor muscle strength. | Women with diabetes can also have symptoms such as urinary tract infections, yeast infections, and dry, itchy skin. |
Causes of Diabetes: Different causes are associated with each type of diabetes
Type 1 diabetes: The immune system mistakenly attacks and destroys insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. Genes may play a role in some people. It’s also possible that a virus sets off the immune system attack. |
Type 2 diabetes: Type 2 diabetes stems from a combination of genetics and lifestyle factors. Being overweight or obese increases your risk too. Carrying extra weight, especially in your belly, makes your cells more resistant to the effects of insulin on your blood sugar. Family members share genes that make them more likely to get type 2 diabetes and to be overweight. |
Gestational diabetes: Gestational diabetes is the result of hormonal changes during pregnancy. The placenta produces hormones that make a pregnant woman’s cells less sensitive to the effects of insulin. This can cause high blood sugar during pregnancy. |
In Ayurveda, diabetes is referred to as a “sweet urine” disease. When blood sugar levels rise above a certain threshold, it spills over into the urine and can be detected. The ancient description of this disease includes an appreciation for the fact that derangements in body tissues take place due to imbalances in metabolism. Ayurveda considers poor digestion as the primary cause of diabetes. Weak digestion leads to the production of a sticky toxin that can accumulate in the pancreatic cells and impair the production of insulin.
A patient first undergoes the Pre-procedure therapies that prepare him/her for the procedures that will be followed. Oleation is done to loosen the toxins and open up the circulation channels and then the person is given a steam bath so that the body gets ready for discarding these wastes.
In this therapy medicinal pastes having high healing properties are applied on a person’s scalp to relieve mental tension, increase the person’s memory power, and relax the body and nervous system.
The herbal paste made of gooseberry, henna, asparagus, mooring, sandalwood, etc is used during this therapy.
This therapy is used to treat diabetes. At first, a person is given an oil massage then herbal oils or medicine-rich buttermilk is poured slowly on a person’s forehead that relaxes the mind and reducing mental stress.
If this therapy is followed for 2-3 weeks continuously it helps in controlling diabetes.
It has a direct effect on our endocrine & metabolic system which regulates hormonal secretions. It increases feel-good factors (hormones-serotonin etc) in the blood which help an individual relax.
After a Pre-operative procedure, a person’s body gets loosened and relaxed. For the treatment of Diabetes Purgation & Medicated Enema therapies of Panchakarma are commonly used by Ayurveda practitioners.
This therapy is very effective for diabetes in which vomiting by herbal medicines is carried out under strict supervision of Ayurveda practitioners. This eliminates the toxin present in the upper parts of the body.
Medicated milk, tea or herbal drink is given to the patient, which he/she has to drink till their stomach is full. Then a small amount of medicinal decoction made of black Pepper, beetle killer root, Tamarind, and Liquor ice is given with honey, which triggers vomiting.
The vomiting in purgation therapy is not unpleasant and a person feels relaxed and light after it
Medicated enema therapy is highly recommended in the treatment of diabetes. During this therapy medicinal decoctions, herbal pastes and oils like Dill seeds, bael, honey, rock salt, etc are used to remove accumulated toxins and metabolic wastes through the anal route.
Once the Pre-operative therapy is complete a person must undergo Post-operative therapy so that he/she can easily go back to normal life. During this process, a person is advised to maintain a strict diet avoiding few things that can be harmful. Ayurveda herbs and medicines must also be taken from time to time which restores back a person’s body and brings a balance to it.
Yoga therapy helps stimulate metabolism and improve the function of glucose homeostasis. Due to these body postures, abdominal organs get a good massage which helps to enhance the functions of respective organs. It also increases muscular strength & elasticity. Blood circulation improves and reaches to target organs in a proper quantity which can help diabetic patient heal their wounds fast. Lastly, increases Oxygenation at the cellular level.
