Right Petrous Bone Tumour Excision Surgery

Clinical Case Report: A case of Bilateral Facial Spasms due to Right Petrous Bone Tumour in Meckel’s Cave and Internal Auditory Meatus (IAM) suggested for Craniotomy with Tumor Excision

Based on shared reports, the patient clinically presented with bilateral facial spasms. Upon evaluation, a tumour is suspected to be in the right petrous bone, extending into the right internal auditory meatus (IAM) with involvement of the VII and VIII cranial nerves and extension into Meckel’s cave.

Meckel’s cave (trigeminal cave) is a cerebrospinal fluid-filled dural pouch located in the middle cranial fossa that houses the trigeminal ganglion and the proximal roots of the trigeminal nerve (CNV).

The petrous part of the temporal bone, often called the petrous pyramid, is an exceptionally dense, rock-like structure at the base of the skull, crucial for protecting the inner ear.

We will need to confirm the diagnosis by doing some tests upon the patient’s arrival. We will also need to check the nature of the tumor to find the best line of treatment for him.

Evaluations required to confirm the diagnosis: The patient will need to undergo detailed Physical and Clinical examinations such as MRI of the brain, CT scan of the temporal bone, Biopsy, blood investigations, and other routine tests.

Possible Treatment Plan: The patient may require craniotomy and tumor excision.

Craniotomy and tumour excision is brain surgery to remove a tumor by temporarily removing part of the skull (craniotomy) for access, then excising (removing) the growth, followed by replacing the bone flap, aiming to relieve symptoms and improve prognosis by removing as much tumor as safely possible.

Kindly note: The advised treatment plan is solely based on the reports shared with us; the final line of treatment will be decided post clinical and physical evaluations on your arrival only.
