Dr. Ravi Gopal Varma is a senior and highly respected neurosurgeon with over 33 years of experience. He is currently working as the Director of Aster Global Institute of Neurosciences and Lead Consultant Neurosurgeon at Aster Hospital. He is known for handling complex brain and spine cases with a strong focus on patient safety and long-term results.
He completed his MBBS from Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute, followed by MS in General Surgery from Manipal Academy of Higher Education, and MCh in Neurosurgery from Sree Chitra Tirunal Institute for Medical Sciences & Technology, Trivandrum. His broad academic training supports his expertise in both routine and advanced neurosurgical procedures.
Dr. Varma specializes in brain tumour treatment, craniotomy, spinal fusion, laminectomy, kyphoplasty, microdiscectomy, and cervical and lumbar disc replacement. He is also a pioneer in Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS), an advanced treatment for Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders.
He has played an important role in strengthening neurosurgery services in India by establishing an MCh Neurosurgery training program and setting up successful Movement Disorder and DBS programs at leading hospitals in Bangalore, Hyderabad, and Mumbai. He has received advanced DBS training in the Netherlands and has organized international workshops on movement disorder surgery.
Dr. Varma is an active member of leading neurosurgical societies and has received national and international recognition for his contributions, including performing the first successful DBS surgery for Neuroacanthocytosis in India.
