What is Shoulder Replacement Surgery?

Shoulder replacement surgery involves removing and artificially replacing damaged areas of the shoulder. The procedure is used to ease pain and increase mobility. The shoulder replacement is an alternative for serious shoulder joint arthritis, osteoarthritis or rheumatoid.

 Treatment for Shoulder Replacement

In the ball and socket of your shoulder joint, the surgeon replaces a natural bone with a material that can be metal or plastic.

Types of Shoulder Replacement:

• Total shoulder replacement – It is replacing the ball at the top of the patient’s humerus with a metal ball, which is attached to the rest of the bones.
• Partial shoulder replacement – During a partial shoulder replacement or hemiarthroplasty of the shoulder, the humeral head of the arm is removed and substituted by a prosthetic ball, but the natural socket or glenoid bone is retained.
• Reverse shoulder replacement – The position of the ball and socket of the shoulder joint is switched or reversed during reverse shoulder replacement. A prothetic socket replaces the ball on the top of the humerus, while a prophetic ball is mounted on the shoulder’s natural socket. This shifts the core of the joint rotation, which makes it possible for the other muscles to reduce the rotating cuff.
• Shoulder Resurfacing – During the procedure, a smoothly rounded cap is attached to the damaged humeral head in order to improve joint function. The shoulder resurfacing does not require the total removal or the insertion of a prosthetic humeral stem from the natural humeral head.
