Cardiology Arrhythmia

“Arrhythmia” refers to any problem in the rate or rhythm of a person's heartbeat.
It occurs when the electrical impulses that coordinate your heartbeats don't work properly, causing the heart to beat too fast (tachycardia), too slow (bradycardia), or irregularly.
Why It Happens The heart's rhythm is controlled by a natural pacemaker called the sinus node, which sends electrical signals through a set pathway.
  • Signaling Issues: Electrical signals are blocked, slowed, or travel in new, unintended pathways.
  • Structural Damage: Scar tissue from a past heart attack, coronary artery disease, or cardiomyopathy can disrupt electrical flow.
  • External Triggers: Imbalances in electrolytes (potassium, magnesium), thyroid disorders, sleep apnea, or excessive caffeine and alcohol use can interfere with heart signaling.
Symptoms
  • Palpitations:
  • Dizziness: Feeling lightheaded or faint due to reduced blood flow to the brain.
  • Physical Strain: Shortness of breath, chest pain, and unexplained fatigue or weakness.
  • Fainting (Syncope)
Diagnosis involves recording the heart's activity through:
  • EKG/ECG: A quick test to measure electrical activity.
  • Monitoring: Wearing a Holter monitor(24–48 hours) or Event recorder (up to 30 days) to catch infrequent symptoms.
  • EP Study: An invasive procedure where catheters are guided into the heart to "map" the exact source of the electrical problem. CUREWhile many arrhythmias are managed with medication, others can be cured through Catheter Ablation. This minimally invasive procedure uses heat or cold energy to destroy the tiny area of heart tissue causing the faulty signals.

Treatment Procedure–

Pace Maker insertion – A small device placed in the chest to regulate slow heartbeats.
Single Chamber Pacemaker- a device with one lead is inserted under the chest skin to regulate heartbeats, often in the right ventricle or atrium.
Double Chamber Pace Maker - A small incision is made near the collarbone to create a pocket for the generator, and leads are guided through a vein into the right atrium and right ventricle using fluoroscopy.
CRDT - A combination device that provides both resynchronization and the defibrillation capabilities of an ICD for patients at risk of sudden cardiac arrest.
AICD - a battery-powered unit placed under the skin—often below the collarbone—with leads that connect directly into the heart chambers.
