VitrectomyWhat is Vitrectomy?

A vitrectomy is a sort of eye surgery to cure different retina and vitreous issues. During surgery, the vitreous is removed and replaced by another solution by the surgeon. The vitreous substance is gel-like, filling the eye’s center part. At the back of the eye, the retina is a layer of cells. Such cells use light to provide the brain with visual information. The vitreous should usually be clear, so that light can pass via the eye to enter the retina. Some issues may make this light blocked by blood and debris. Scar tissue may also move or break the retina into the vitreous. All this could affect sight. Often the surgeons do a retinal detachment with vitrectomy. The removal of the vitreous provides the retina a better access and reduces retina tensions. The surgeon uses tiny tools during vitrectomy to cut off the vitreous and remove it. The doctor will then make all the necessary changes, such as repairing the retina with a hole. Air or other gas might be placed into the eye to keep the retina in the right position.

What are the symptoms leading to doctor’s recommending – Vitrectomy?

  • A hole in the retina’s middle part
  • Vitreous hemorrhage
  • Retinal detachment
  • Severe eye injury

Evaluations for Vitrectomy

  • Optical coherence tomography
  • Fluorescein angiography
  • MRI
  • Amsler grid test

Vitrectomy Procedure

The doctor exposes the eye and makes a cut in the outer eye layer. In the sclera, the white part of the eye, the doctor will create a tiny cut. The vitreous and any scar tissue or foreign content will be removed by the doctor. If necessary, the doctor will perform other eye repairs. The doctor will substitute the vitreous for some other fluid, such as silicone oil or saline. The doctor may stitch the surgical incisions. An antibiotic ointment to prevent infection will be placed on the eye. A patch will cover the eye.
