What is Bone Grafting?
A bone graft is a surgical procedure that is used to fix bone or joint problems. Bone grafting or bone tissue transplantation is effective in repairing bones damaged by trauma or problem joints. It is also useful to grow bone around an implanted device, such as a total knee replacement where bone loss or fracture occurs. A bone graft can fill an area where bone is absent or contribute to the stability of the structure. The bone that is used in a bone graft may come from the body of the patient or a donor, or it may be completely synthetic. It can provide a framework where, if accepted by the body, the new living bones may grow.
Two types of bone grafts are common:
- Allograft – using the bone of a deceased donor or a cleaned and stored cadaver in a tissue bank.
- Autograft – In which the surgeon uses bone within the body, like ribs, hips, pelvis or wrist

Treatment for Bone Graft
During the bone graft procedure, the patient will be given general anesthesia. The surgeon will create an incision where the graft is required in the skin above. The surgeon shapes the donated bone in order to fit the area. The graft will be fitted with any of the following: pins, plates, screws, wires, cables. Once the graft is in place securely, the incision or wound will be closed by the surgeon with stitches and wound bandages. A cast or splint may be used while healing to support the bone.
Estimated Costs
The cost of investigations ranges between USD 400 and USD 600
The cost for a Bone Graft may range between USD 3800 and USD 7200 depending upon the quantum of bone to be grafted and the location for the graft.
