Findings – As per the shared reports, the patient is suffering from a traumatic cervical spinal cord injury following severe trauma to the cervical spine. He is currently paraplegic and has limited control in his lower body with severe spasticity and muscle wasting. This can only happen when the spinal cord is largely damaged.
We will need to recheck the lesion to determine how best to handle this through further investigation.
Investigations needed – He will need an MRI, X-rays, Nerve conduction test and other routine tests to determine the feasibility of any treatment.
Possible line of treatment – The possible line of treatment will depend upon investigative outcomes. Unfortunately, the lost spinal cord cannot be regenerated; hence, body movement cannot be restored to 100%. But we can work on spasticity and pain. For this, there will be more than one possibility.
Possibility one – In case the spasticity is too much, and if the family can afford it, he can be offered baclofen pump insertion surgery.
A baclofen pump (Intrathecal Baclofen Therapy) is a surgically implanted device that delivers the muscle relaxant baclofen directly into the spinal fluid to treat severe spasticity from conditions like Cerebral Palsy, MS, or spinal cord injury, offering significant relief from muscle stiffness, spasms, and pain by bypassing the bloodstream for a much lower, more potent dose, requiring periodic refills and potential battery replacements over time
Possibility two – If the spasticity is less, he can be offered physiotherapy and rehabilitation to manage his pain.
Physiotherapy and rehabilitation are focused on restoring, maintaining, and maximizing movement, function, and quality of life after injury, illness, or disability, using tailored exercise, manual therapy, and education to improve strength, flexibility, balance, and independence for all ages, helping people return to normal activities
