Re do surgery for blocked v p shunt due to cyst formation hydrocephalus

Sample Opinion // Neurosurgery // Blocked Shunt V.P. Shunt due to Cyst// Re-do Ventriculoperitoneal Shunt Surgery// Hydrocephalus and Cyst Removal

Findings: As per the shared reports, the baby previously underwent shunting of the right lateral ventricle, and the shunt catheter is properly positioned but possibly blocked. The given images and report suggest internal hydrocephalus with asymmetry of the lateral ventricles.

The report also mentions but does not confirm a cyst formation in the prepontine cistern extending into the brainstem. The cyst, if confirmed on the radiological images, can be the reason for blockage of the previously implanted VP shunt, though not necessarily.

Hydrocephalus is the abnormal buildup of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the brain, which increases pressure on brain tissue and can cause damage.

We will need to confirm the reason for CSF accumulation and the failure of the previously done VP shunt

Investigations: The baby needs to undergo detailed clinical and physical evaluations, which include some investigations such as MRI Brain, CSF study, blood investigations, and other routine tests.

Possible line of treatment: Baby Rakhim (from Uzbekistan) will need to undergo redo VP shunt placement, and if the cyst is confirmed, she will also need cyst removal.

A Ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt procedure places a tube system to drain excess cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from the brain into the abdominal cavity. The surgery involves creating a small hole in the skull to insert a catheter into a brain ventricle, connecting it to a valve and a second catheter that runs under the skin to the abdomen. The excess fluid then drains into the peritoneal cavity, where the body absorbs it.

Kindly note: The advised plan is solely based on the reports shared with us. The final line of treatment will be decided post the physical and clinical evaluations of the patient on arrival only.
