Clinical Case Report: Surgical Management of Elbow Mass in a 17 Year Old Girl Patient from Mozambique: Differential Diagnosis of Olecranon Bursitis, Ganglion Cyst, Lipoma, Rheumatoid Nodules and Sebaceous Cyst

A 17-year-old girl with swelling in her elbow. There has been no medical report attached along with this, and our assumptions as mentioned below are based on the picture of the elbow shared.

A swelling like this can take place due to multiple reasons –

• Olecranon Bursitis: Swelling at the bony tip, often from repetitive leaning or resting on elbows. It is typically painless unless infected.
• Ganglion Cyst: Soft, jelly-filled, sometimes movable lumps that appear near joints or tendons.
• Lipoma: A slow-growing, fatty lump that is doughy and moves easily under the skin.
• Rheumatoid Nodules: Firm lumps that can develop in individuals with arthritis.
• Sebaceous Cyst: A small, noncancerous lump under the skin caused by a clogged gland.

We will need to confirm the diagnosis by doing some investigations such as MRI, Tissue biopsy, and other routine tests.

Possible line of treatment – The possibility may vary depending upon the investigative outcomes.

• If the swelling is harmless, she may need medications with some rest.
• If the swelling is due to fluid filling or due to clogged glands, she may need a drainage procedure.
• If it is a cyst or tumour (most probably benign), she may need a small surgery to resect the growth.
