Dr. Sandeep Aggarwal is a highly respected and experienced surgeon with nearly 30 years of medical practice. He currently serves as the Chairman of the Manipal Institute of Minimal Access, Bariatric, GI & Robotic Surgery at Manipal Hospital, where he is known for combining advanced surgical techniques with compassionate patient care.
He completed his MBBS in 1990 and MS in General Surgery in 1994 from All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, one of the most prestigious medical institutions in India. Over the years, Dr. Aggarwal has built a strong reputation as a leader in minimally invasive and laparoscopic surgery, especially for complex and high-risk cases.
Dr. Aggarwal specializes in bariatric (weight-loss) surgery, helping patients manage obesity and related health problems through procedures like laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy and gastric bypass. He is also highly skilled in hernia surgery, including complex hernia repairs using laparoscopic and robotic techniques. In addition, he performs advanced upper gastrointestinal surgeries, solid organ surgeries such as laparoscopic splenectomy and adrenalectomy, and has extensive experience in renal transplantation.
His contribution to the medical field goes beyond the operation theatre. Dr. Aggarwal is a Commonwealth Fellow and holds prestigious international fellowships, including FACS (American College of Surgeons), FCLS, and UICC Fellowship. He also worked as a Research Fellow at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York (USA), gaining global exposure to advanced laparoscopic surgery.
Dr. Aggarwal has received several national and international awards for his research and academic excellence. These include the Best Researcher Award by IAGES (2020), the Obesity Surgery Editors’ Recognition Award (2020), and a Certificate of Commendation at AIIMS Excellence Research Day (2024). He is widely recognized for pioneering bariatric surgery in India’s public healthcare system since 2008. He established a dedicated Bariatric Clinic at AIIMS and played a key role in starting a 2-year Bariatric Fellowship Program under the National Board of Examinations.
He has also mentored several leading public hospitals such as AIIMS Bathinda, PGIMER Chandigarh, LNJP, and LHMC, helping them successfully launch bariatric surgery programs. In terms of surgical volume, his experience is exceptional, with over 1,300 bariatric surgeries, 400+ kidney transplants, and more than 10,000 laparoscopic procedures performed during his career.
Dr. Aggarwal is the Founder President of FORMS (Foundation for Obesity Research and Metabolic Surgery) and actively contributes to medical education as a Section Editor and contributor to a Springer-published textbook on Obesity, Bariatric, and Metabolic Surgery.
