What is Nerve Grafting?

Nerve grafts are used if a patient suffers from a nerve injury which leads to total loss of muscle function or feeling. A nerve graft is a surgical procedure that replaces or bridges a damaged part of the nerve by a segment of the unrelated nerve. The donor nerve acts as a pathway through which axons may reach the targeted area. Nerves that are considered expendable or much less significant than the restoration feature are chosen for grafts. Nerves used for grafting include the sural nerve in the leg that gives the foot a sensation and the medial antebrachial skin tissue that gives a feel to the internal shoulder. The sural nerve runs from the knee to the outside of the foot down the back of the leg.

Treatment for Nerve Grafting

The sural nerve, the superficial radial sensory nerve and the medial antabrachial cutaneous nerve form the common donor nerves. The severe nerve is exposed during a graft repair surgery. Also the donor nerve is exposed and an adequate part can be removed. The surgeon uses microsurgical techniques to re-connect the severe nerve with the graft in location. If the stump of the nerve is much larger than the material in the graft, two or more sections of the graft may be sewn side by side in place.
