What is DBS (Deep Brain Stimulation) Surgery?
Deep brain stimulation is a procedure in which patients with certain neurological conditions such as Parkinson disease, critical tremor, epilepsy and dystonia, a movement disorder in which the muscles contract and spasm, can be helped. A surgeon positions a machine underneath a patient’s skin with deep brain stimulation (DBS). The unit delivers electrical impulses to a particular part of the brain. These pulses can block unusual signals undergoing several circumstances of neurology.

Treatment for DBS (Deep Brain Stimulation) Surgery
Two surgical procedures will be performed: one to put the lead into the brain, and the other to put the pulse generator into the chest. Sometimes the procedures are performed simultaneously, but the lead is usually first. A few days later the patient receives the pulse generator. The doctor would need a way of helping him navigate specifically in the brain during procedure. Mostly it is a wire frame which is screwed into the skull after the scalp gets numbed. Few surgeons even use a frameless system, screwed the day before the procedure. A brain scan is performed for the patient to generate the map using the frame or plate. Then the doctor makes a small hole in the skull. A special tool will be used to scan the appropriate spot to position the lead on a frame or plates. The doctor places the lead once the target point is identified. Under the skin of the scalp is the wire connecting the battery pack. With plastic cap and stitches, the hole in the skull is closed.
