Dr. Krishna Subramony Iyer is one of India’s most experienced pediatric cardiac surgeons, recognised for his clinical expertise and commitment to providing cardiac care for children in India and other developing countries. Dr. Iyer graduated from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, with his M.B.B.S., M.S. (General Surgery), and M.Ch. (Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery). After his basic training, he joined AIIMS’s Department of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery, where he held the position of Additional Professor until moving to Escorts Heart Institute to establish the institute’s pediatric cardiac care division. After his medical training, he joined the faculty of the cardiac surgery department of AIIMS, New Delhi. He then completed his training in infant cardiac surgery in Australia before founding AIIMS’s neonatal cardiac surgery program.
Dr. Iyer has performed surgeries on over 10,000 babies, children, and adults with congenital heart diseases. These procedures have included tetralogy of Fallot corrections, DORV, Truncus, arterial switch procedures, double switch operations, TAPVC repairs, Fontan and Fontan-type procedures, and more. Complex congenital heart diseases can be treated using a variety of one-stage and multi-stage corrections, conduit repairs, and senning operations. Under Dr. Iyer direction, the program for pediatric cardiac care across India and the surrounding Southeast Asian nations became known as the benchmark for pediatric cardiac care. Over 14,000 congenital heart surgeries were performed by Dr. K S Iyer on patients from all over India as well as abroad in more than 15 different countries. He acted as the founding president of the Paediatric Cardiac Society of India as well as the Asia-Pacific Paediatric Cardiac Society. Currently, he serves as the Indian Journal of Thoracic Cardiovascular Surgery’s editor.
