What is a Biopsy?

A Biopsy is done to determine what’s going on in your body at the tissue level and cellular level. In a biopsy, samples of your tissue, cells or fluids are removed so a pathologist can examine them for signs of disease.

Biopsy results can help determine:

The type of cancer: Whether the cells are cancerous or not and what is the type of cancer
The grade of cancer: This determines how aggressive the cancer is and it is expressed on a scale of 1 to 4
Genetic alterations: To determine the genetic alterations to find out whether patient is a candidate for targeted therapies

Biopsy is also done to diagnose conditions, like:

Inflammatory disorders of kidney (nephritis) or liver (hepatitis)
Tuberculosis
Chronic pancreatitis
Peptic ulcer disease
Endometriosis

Types of Biopsies:

There are different methods for different biopsies, such as:

Bone marrow biopsy: A special biopsy needle and syringe is used to obtain a small sample of bone marrow. This is used to diagnose blood cancers, blood disorders and other diseases.
Cone biopsy: It is done to remove abnormal tissue from your cervix. It is done to detect cervical cancer or cervical dysplasia that could lead to cancer.
Excisional biopsy or incisional biopsies: In these procedures, incisions or cuts in your body are made to remove tissue from inside your body.
Liquid biopsy: This blood test detects signs of cancerous cells or cancer cell DNA specially in blood cancer.
Needle biopsy: Providers use needle biopsies to extract cells, fluid or tissues. Your provider may order a needle biopsy if they feel an unusual lump or bump on your body or imaging tests detect potential issues.
Punch biopsy: Providers use a special device to remove tissue that may be cancerous. Providers use a special device that punches a hole in your skin’s surface.
Sentinel node biopsy: Providers do this procedure to see if cancer cells have spread from an original tumor.
Shave biopsy: A razor is used to scrape up a small sample of skin cells to detect skin cancer.
FNAC (Fine needle aspiration cytology).
Stereotactic biopsy especially in brain cancer or breast cancer.
Inflammatory diseases of muscle (such as polymyositis or dermatomyositis).
Diseases of the connective tissue and blood vessels (such as polyarteritis nodosa).
