What is Truncus Arteriosus?
Truncus Arteriosus is a rare type of heart disease in which a single blood vessel (truncus arteriosus) comes out of the right and left ventricles, instead of the normal 2 vessels (pulmonary artery and aorta). It is present at birth (congenital heart disease).
What happens in Truncus Arteriosus?
In a normal heart, the blood pumps from the right ventricle to the lungs (via the pulmonary artery) and from the left ventricle to the body (via the aorta).
A baby with truncus arteriosus will have:
- One Single Vessel:A single large artery (the truncus) arises from both ventricles.
- Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD):There is almost always a large hole between the two lower chambers of the heart, allowing mixed blood to flow directly into the single trunk.
- Truncal Valve:A single valve (the truncal valve) controls the blood flow out of the heart into the main artery
How is Truncus Arteriosus corrected through surgery?
The repair of truncus arteriosus requires separation of the pulmonary artery bifurcation from the single arterial trunk, closure of the ventricular septal defect, and establishment of an unobstructed pathway from the right ventricle to the pulmonary arteries. This operation is now performed routinely.
Cost of Truncus Arteriosus Repair Surgery
The cost includes complete surgical correction with Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD) closure.Â
