There are two main types of targeted therapy drugs:

- Large molecular drugs typically cannot fit inside a cell. They act by attacking, weakening, or removing proteins or enzymes on the cell’s surface. They are often referred to as a “lock and key” because the molecule functions as a key, opening the enzyme or protein on the cell’s surface like a lock.
