Dr. Sundar Sankaran is a highly respected and senior kidney specialist with over 45 years of medical experience. He is currently working as the Program Director at the Aster Institute of Renal Transplantation at Aster Whitefield, Bangalore, where he plays a key role in leading advanced kidney care and transplant services.
Dr. Sankaran completed his MBBS from the University of Mysore in 1978, followed by an MD in General Medicine from Kasturba Medical College in 1982. He then specialized further by earning a DNB in Nephrology from Christian Medical College, Vellore, in 1987, one of India’s most prestigious medical institutions. His strong academic background and decades of experience make him a trusted name in kidney care.
He specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of kidney-related conditions. His areas of expertise include dialysis and haemodialysis, peritoneal dialysis, and renal replacement therapy for patients with kidney failure. He has extensive experience in managing acute kidney injury (AKI), acute renal failure, and chronic kidney disease (CKD). Dr. Sankaran also treats electrolyte imbalances, diabetes-related kidney problems, and provides care in the Nephrology ICU. In addition, he is skilled in nephrectomy (kidney removal) and offers palliative renal care to improve the quality of life for patients with advanced kidney disease.
Dr. Sundar Sankaran has made significant contributions to the field of nephrology in India. He is a founder member of several important professional bodies, including the Indian Society of Organ Transplantation, the Peritoneal Dialysis Society of India, the Haemodialysis Society of India, and the Nephrology Association of Karnataka.
Over the years, Dr. Sankaran has received several prestigious awards in recognition of his lifelong dedication to kidney patients. These include the Dronacharya Award from AVATAR, the Paul Harris Fellow and Vocational Services Award from the Rotary Club, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Nephrology Association of Karnataka for his outstanding service to kidney patients. He has also been honored with renowned medical orations such as the Padmabhushan Dr. MK Mani Oration, Dr. Talwalkar Oration, and Dr. Bapat Memorial Oration.
