An ovarian cystectomy is the surgical procedure used to remove a fluid-filled sac (cyst) from one or both of your ovaries while preserving the healthy ovarian tissue. While many cysts resolve on their own, surgery is recommended if a cyst is exceptionally large, causes severe pain, fails to clear up, or looks suspicious on imaging.

Surgical Approaches

Depending on the size, complexity, and nature of your cyst, your surgeon will recommend one of two primary techniques:
