Cancer of Nasal Cavity

Cancer of the nasal cavity is a rare type of cancer that begins in the hollow space behind the nose where air passes on its way to the throat. This area helps filter, warm, and humidify the air we breathe. When abnormal cells in this region start to grow uncontrollably, they form a tumor that can block airflow and spread to nearby tissues.

The exact cause is not always known, but long-term exposure to dust, chemicals, smoking, or certain infections may increase the risk. Symptoms often include a blocked nose, nosebleeds, headaches, changes in smell, or swelling around the eyes. Because these signs can look like common sinus problems, nasal cavity cancer is often diagnosed late. Early detection and treatment are important for better recovery.

Types of Nasal Cavity Cancer

1. Squamous Cell Carcinoma – The most common type, starting in the thin, flat cells that line the nasal cavity.
2. Adenocarcinoma – Begins in glandular cells that produce mucus.
3. Melanoma – Develops from pigment-producing cells, usually appearing as a dark growth inside the nose.
4. Sarcoma – A rare type that starts in bone, cartilage, or soft tissues of the nasal cavity.
5. Lymphoma – Originates in immune system cells and can affect the nasal cavity lining.
