What is Microscopic Decompression?

Microscopic Decompression

Spinal decompression is a procedure that relieves pressure and alleviates pain from the impingement on the spinal cord or nerves of the bone or disk. When an intervertebral disc ruptures or herniates in the spine and pressures neural tissue, such as the spinal cord, nerves, and nerve roots, spinal decompression is carried out. It may trigger pain and other signs, such as numbness or muscle weakness, in the neck, arms, and legs. Additionally, spinal stenosis, spondylolisthesis, or a spinal tumor in some unusual instances are caused by neural impingement.

What are the symptoms leading to the doctor’s recommendation – Microscopic Decompression?

  • Stiffness in the neck
  • Pain
  • Cramping
  • Numbness
  • Burning pain

Evaluations for Microscopic Decompression / spinal decompression

  • X-rays
  • CT scan
  • MRI
  • Myelogram

Treatment for Microscopic Decompression

The surgeon will make an incision to treat the vertebra. To open the vertebra, gently push aside soft tissue, such as skin, fat, and muscle.  To relieve the origin of compression, cut off all or portion of the vertebral component. Remove another compression source; bone spurs or disk material. Ease the soft tissues and close the incision. Spinal decompression can also be done nowadays by means of a minimally invasive procedure, which enables the surgeon to dilate the spine muscles rather than separating the muscles. In comparison to traditional open spinal surgery, a minimally invasive decompression procedure usually leaves the patient with a tiny scar.
