A ventricular septal defect (VSD) is a common congenital heart defect characterized by a hole in the wall (septum) that separates the heart’s lower chambers (ventricles). This hole allows oxygen-rich blood to leak from the left ventricle back into the right ventricle, causing the heart and lungs to work harder. A VSD is also called a Hole in the Heart.
There are 3 Types of Procedures Possible for closure of VSD –
1. Open-Heart Surgery – This is the most time-tested and widely preferred approach for fixing most VSDs. In this procedure, a cardiothoracic surgeon makes an incision down the centre of the chest (sternotomy). For small holes, the surgeon may simply stitch them closed. For larger holes, they sew a permanent patch—made of synthetic fabric or the body’s own tissue—directly over the defect. Over time, the heart’s natural lining grows over this patch, making it a permanent part of the heart.
2. Device Closure Procedure -In this procedure, a doctor inserts a thin, flexible tube called a catheter into a large blood vessel in the groin and guides it up to the heart using live imaging. During the process, a tiny, umbrella-like closure device is pushed through the tube and deployed across the hole, sealing it shut instantly.
3. Pulmonary Artery Banding – This is used in complicated and rare cases only, when an infant is extremely ill, has multiple holes, or has an unusual defect anatomy. In this procedure, instead of fixing the hole directly, the surgeon places a band around the main lung artery to narrow it.This limits blood flow and drops high pressure in the lungs, protecting them from permanent damage and giving the baby time to grow stronger before undergoing a full open-heart patch repair later in infancy.
The Choice of the procedure often depends upon size of the hole in the heart and complexity of the situation.
