Cancer of Throat

Throat cancer begins in the throat, which is the pharynx, larynx, or tonsils. It develops when abnormal cells grow uncontrollably and form a tumor. This condition can affect breathing, speaking, and swallowing, making early detection very important. Common risk factors include smoking, excessive alcohol use, HPV infection, and prolonged exposure to certain chemicals.

Symptoms of throat cancer may include a persistent sore throat, hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, ear pain, or a lump in the neck. While these symptoms can be caused by other conditions too, it’s best to consult a doctor if they don’t improve within a couple of weeks. With timely treatment such as surgery, radiation, or chemotherapy, the chances of recovery improve.

Types of Throat Cancer

1. Pharyngeal Cancer – Starts in the pharynx (the tube behind the nose and mouth leading to the esophagus).
2. Laryngeal Cancer – Affects the voice box (larynx), which is responsible for sound production.

Tonsil Cancer – Begins in the tonsils, which are located at the back of the throat.
