What is Tendon Transfer?

A tendon transfer is a procedure that moves the insertion of a tendon, but its origin remains the same. There are more than 40 distinct muscles in the forearm and hand. Many of these muscles have functions which overlap. Some muscles may not be moving properly after an injury. A tendon transmission is a procedure to substitute non-working muscle and tendon with the working muscle and tendon.

Treatment for Tendon Transfer

The patient may have mild sedation in the surgery, or he / she may be asleep. The anesthesia type depends on the injury. One or more skin incisions are made by the surgeon. The surgeon moves the tendon to the extra muscle and sews it into the tendon of the not working muscle. Sometimes it is necessary to do more than one tendon transfer at a moment. Then the surgeon stitches the skin.

After Surgery

You can have a cast or splint after the surgery to safeguard the fresh tendon to the current place until the tendon cures. It requires generally 1-2 months.
