What is Craniotomy?

A craniotomy is a procedure to reveal the brain to part of the bone out of the skull. The bone section called the bone flap is removed with specialized instruments. After the brain procedure is performed, the bone flap is temporarily separated and substituted. Several craniotomy processes might use computer instruction and MRI and CT tests to achieve the exact position of the brain. This process involves the use of a screen positioned on the skull or a frameless structure with markers or landmarks superficially positioned on the body. In combination with craniotomy, either of these imaging procedures is used as stereotactic craniotomy.

Treatment for Craniotomy 

In this procedure, the patient is given a general anesthesia. The neurosurgeon identifies the ideal place for craniotomy by preoperative imaging. The surgery starts by cutting the scalp first. Small holes with a device known as a perforator are drilled into the exposed skull. A craniotomy tool is used to make a removable bone flap from a burr hole into the next. Generally a flap opens the membrane that covers the brain. Brain injury or illness is performed, for instance by repairing ruptured vessels or by removing the blood clot or the tumor. Once the surgery is complete, the excised bone will be substituted and the muscle and skin will be stitched and a drain within the brain will remove the surplus blood that was left from the procedure.
