Bankart Repair
Detailed Information

Bankart Repair

What is Bankart Repair?

Bankart procedure is a surgical technique for repairing recurrent shoulder joint dislocations, with a view to restoring normal function by re-joining torn ligaments to the right place in the joint of the shoulders. Repeated anterior subluxations of the shoulder cause this injury. The shoulder joint dislocation can damage the ring of connective tissue around the glenoid labrum. The connection between the labrum and the capsule can also be damaged.

Treatment for Bankart Repair

A detached labrum is repaired using an arthroscopic procedure. The labrum is a thick cartilage band attached to the bone of the glenoid. It lines the socket of the shoulder and helps to hold the humerus ball in place. Small incisions are made in the shoulder’s front and back. A tiny video camera is inserted into the joint by the surgeon. In order to execute the procedure, small tools are inserted. The surgeon cleans the area around the labrum detached, removing any loose particles or rough edges. In the bone near the detached labrum, the surgeon drills a few small holes. In the holes, anchors are put. These anchors are used around the glenoid to hold sutures. The surgeon attaches the sutures to the labrum and pulls the sutures against the anchors firmly, reattaching the glenoid to the labrum. Small bandages can close the incision. The arm is generally put in a sling after surgery. Physical therapy is required to recover the full range of movement and increase the power of the shoulder. The labrum will re-attach itself to the glenoid socket over time.
