Organ transplantation is a medical procedure in which an organ is removed from one body and placed in the body of a recipient, to replace a damaged or missing organ.

Organ transplant is the last suggested procedure in cases of organ failure, and is undertaken only in critical cases and emergency medical situations. In such situations, at the critical end of organ failure, a healthy organ for transplant from a person living or deceased is transplanted into the organ transplant recipient, offering them a new chance of survival.

Chronic or acquired conditions such as diabetes, Tumors and etc or physical injuries can also be reasons for requirement of an organ transplant surgery. Organs that have been successfully transplanted include the Heart, Kidneys, Liver, Lungs, Intestine, and Cornea. Of these, kidney transplants are usually undertaken as the most common form of organ transplant and see a high organ transplant success rate. Organ donors may be living, brain dead, or dead via circulatory death.Living donor

In living donors, the donor remains alive and donates an organ or part of an organ in which the remaining organ can regenerate or take on the workload of the rest of the organ (primarily single kidney donation, partial donation of liver).

Deceased donor

Deceased donors (cadaveric) are people who have been declared brain-dead and whose organs are kept viable by ventilators or other mechanical mechanisms until they can be excised for transplantation. Apart from brain-stem dead donors, there is increasing use of donation-after-circulatory-death-donors (non-heart-beating donors) to increase the potential pool of donors as demand for transplants continues to grow.

1. Intestinal Transplant

Intestinal transplantation (intestine transplantation or small bowel transplantation) is the surgical replacement of the small intestine for chronic and acute cases of intestinal failure. Healthy intestine is taken from a deceased patient and transplanted into the organ transplant recipient. While intestinal failure can oftentimes be treated with alternative therapies such as parenteral nutrition (PN), complications such as PN-associated liver disease and short bowel syndrome may make transplantation the only viable option. One of the rarest type of organ transplantation performed, intestine transplantation is becoming increasingly prevalent as a therapeutic option due to improvements in immunosuppressive regimens, surgical technique, PN, and the clinical management of pre and post-transplant patients.
