Cerebral palsy Treatment in Ayurveda
Detailed Information

Can Cerebral Palsy be treated?

There is a treatment for Cerebral palsy in Ayurveda.

What is Cerebral Palsy?

Doctors classify CP according to the main type of movement disorder involved. Depending on which areas of the brain are affected, one or more of the following movement disorders can occur:

  • Spasticity (Stiff muscles)
  • Dyskinesia (Uncontrollable movements)
  • Ataxia (Poor balance and coordination)

There are four main types of CP:

Spastic Cerebral Palsy is the most common form of CP. Spastic CP affects about 80% of people with CP. People with spastic CP have increased muscle tone. This means their muscles are stiff and, as a result, their movements can be awkward. Spastic CP usually is described by what parts of the body are affected:

  1. Dyskinetic Cerebral Palsy (also includes athetoid, choreoathetoid, and dystonic cerebral palsies)
    1. Ataxic Cerebral Palsy which causes people to have problems with balance and coordination. They might be unsteady when they walk. They might have a hard time with quick movements or movements that need a lot of control, like writing. They might have a hard time controlling their hands or arms when they reach for something.
  2. Mixed Cerebral Palsy
    1. Some people have symptoms of more than one type of CP. The most common type of mixed CP is spastic-dyskinetic CP.
  3. Mesenchymal Stem Cells
    1. (MSCs) are one of the most studied types of stem cells to treat Cerebral Palsy patients. The potential mechanisms of Mesenchymal Stem Cell Treatments are:
      1. Reducing the in ammatory response and avoiding secondary brain lesion;
      2. differentiating into neurons, astrocyte, microglia, and oligodendrocyte, which help to repair myelin sheath, promoting axon regeneration, and increasing transmission of nerve impulses;
      3. producing the cytokines and growth factors, such as glial-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF), brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), nerve growth factor (NGF), neurotrohin 3 (NT-3), neurotrohin 4/5 (NT 4/5) which promote brain neuroprotection
      4. generating new vessels, thereby increasing the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to injured and hypoxic tissue and reducing the intrinsic cell apoptosis.

Treatment Of Cerebral Palsy in Ayurveda

According to Ayurveda, this condition is known as Phakka means inability to walk or move. As per Ayurveda, there are three main energies – vata (Those related to movement in body blood,breath and excretion), pitta (Body meta bolism, digestion tempreture heat etc) and kapha (water and earth elements in our body) are responsible for healthy life. Imbalance of any three energies may results in health complications. Vata dosha is responsible for controlling motor and sensory activity of brain. Imbalance of vata dosha is responsible for cerebral palsy as per ayurveda.

Cerebral palsy refers to a group of neurological disorders that appear in infancy or childhood and permanently affect body movement and muscle co-ordination.

  • Lack of muscle co-ordination when performing voluntary movements (ataxia)
  • Stiff or tight muscles and exaggerated reflexes (spasticity)
  • Walking with one foot or leg dragging
  • Walking on the toes, a crouched gait, or a ‘scissored ‘ gait
  • Muscle tone that is either too stiff or too floppy

Cerebral palsy is usually due to brain damage in the first few months or years of life, brain infections such as bacterial meningitis or viral encephalitis, or head injury.

Ayurveda treatment for Cerebral Palsy:

yurveda has shown very good results in patients of Cerebral palsy. Though cerebral palsy may not be fully cured, Ayurvedic treatment can definitely help to reduce disability and improve the functioning of the affected individual to a great extent.The Ayurvedic treatment of cerebral palsy focuses on treating the presenting symptoms and attempting to reverse the brain damage.

Ayurveda is an ancient science of medicine which provides effective and natural ways to manage the diseased condition. According to Ayurveda, this condition can be managed with the help of herbal medicines or therapies to some extent. Ayurveda mainly works on the symptoms associated with the disease and reverse the brain damage. There are different herbs used in Ayurveda to support the symptoms of cerebral palsy such as Ashwangandha (Withania somnifera), Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri), Curcumin (Curcuma longa) etc.

Useful Medicine for Regeneration of Damaged brain cells & Improving functional Capacity & reducing convulsion:
